Creative Projects

Below is a collection of pieces for mediums such as film/TV, video games and more which feature original music composed, arranged and recorded by Daniel Campoli.

Friday Night Gamecast

In addition to their Patreon exclusive series music, Friday Night Gamecast commissioned me to produce the music for Season 2 of their main podcast series. They had in mind a lo-fi jazz setting, so I set about producing a theme that would achieve their vision of creating a relationship between the music and their personalities as good friends and podcast hosts. Hosts Will and Nick have great chemistry of friendship and their dialogue dynamic is warm and inviting, so a dreamy, major mode felt appropriate. Next, the two hosts are very laid back individuals, so influences of cool jazz like Davis come to mind, with the instrumentation of piano and trumpet being reinforced by a lilting, slightly delayed drum beat. Finally, the music thematically plays with a sense of twos. The duality of Nick and Will: the chord changes alternate between two major 7 chords—one for Nick, one for Will—and two melody instruments take turns. First the piano, then the muted trumpet have a conversation, while the bass plucks a simple two-note pattern. Listen below!

Friday Night Gamecast Patreon Exclusive Series

Friday Night Gamecast commissioned me to produce a music theme for a Patreon exclusive series of theirs called Didja Hate It?, a series in which one host deliberately recommends a game that they think the other would hate after which they discuss it. Hosts Nick and Will felt an upbeat theme in a minor mode would be appropriate for their music vision, so, given the title Didja Hate It? and the series concept, I opted for a more aggressive edge with rock and metal tendencies in addition to major and minor inflections of a more eclectic melody. Being stuck playing a game you hate can be hell, and I wanted to deliver that in music.”

The Elder Trolls Gaming Podcast

“The Elder Trolls Gaming Podcast wanted a high energy, chip tune theme. My palette for this project drew from sounds of the early years in video games in addition to the early years of adolescence at the turn of the millennium. The result was a piece of music using retro synthesizer patches and pop punk bravado to deliver a blistering introduction to the boisterous personalities of The Elder Trolls Gaming Podcast.”

Will of the Scry YouTube Channel

“I composed a theme for One Piece anime reaction YouTube channel Will of the Scry which attained 150,000+ YouTube plays during the run of the show. After researching the source content itself and having always been a fan of adventure and fantasy anime—especially the music—I knew what color palette I wanted to start with. A small ensemble of piano, Irish whistle, percussion, cello and harp would help me capture an exotic, soaring theme carrying Japanese influences and Celtic undertones. The piece of music would accompany intro and outro segments of each video on the channel and separate shorter themes were cut for the client’s flexibility.”

Another End

“The developers of this video game required a collection of musical pieces reflecting the diverse personalities of five divine characters within the story: Entity, Architect, Protector, Illusionist and Destroyer. It felt appropriate to compose the character themes of the divine characters within the symphonic genre due to their metaphysical nature and power. As the game world’s first divine creator, Entity's theme is the most pure, with shimmering orchestration and lyrical melody. Architect's theme was composed to sound frantic, anxious and busy. Protector's theme called for a heroic, battle worn and hardened music. I took some creative liberty with Illusionist's music in that I felt it should possess a quirky, mystical quality as the developers described the character as a trickster. Destroyer's music is full of malice, with a heavy orchestral and choral texture, evoking power and hatred beyond measure. Character music is presented each time the Player accomplishes a task pertaining to that character and additional abridged versions of each theme were composed at the developers' request.”

Stranger Things Mike and Eleven Tribute

This project was inspired by the young, electric love that Stranger Things characters Mike and Eleven share together. The relationship between Mike and Eleven, I feel, is the heart and soul of the show. The emotional essence of the entirety of the second season, for instance, was Eleven’s desire and struggle to be reunited with Mike. Inspired by the nostalgia of being young and in love for the first time I wanted to put together a project to express my own tribute to Mike and Eleven who are but one embodiment of that feeling, depicting the narrative of their story thus far. Musically, this presented an opportunity to explore an electronic sound palette, combining retro and modern synthesizers to reach a climax that depicts their reunion. The music begins with a fragile but inviting ostinato that lends to a feeling of the unfamiliar—the small beginnings of a big love. As Mike and Eleven begin to spend more time together and grow closer, the music introduces more sonic elements and themes to reflect their growing relationship.” Disclaimer: Daniel Campoli does not own the rights to the video content in this piece. Secret War

"Secret War, finalist of the Yorkton Film Festival for Best Student Film, is a short documentary focusing on the lives of two Canadian war veterans suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder who engage in the healing process through animal assisted therapy--in this case, equine therapy. With some exceptions, much of the music of this film possesses a pastoral flavor to pay homage to the rural setting of Ontario, the home province of both veterans. Utilizing light, instrumental textures of piano, acoustic guitar, electric guitar and electric bass with some orchestral color, the music functions as a compliment to the undeniable emotion of the moving documentary. The rights to Secret War were purchased by the CBC and the documentary was aired August 1, 2015."

Secret War was a delicate project... No one could have imagined the impact Daniel’s music would have on it. It was his incredible empathy and soulful intuition that brought the film to the next level.

The Book with No Name Orchestral Suite

“As my honors work for my bachelor's degree in music, the creative goal for this piece was to compose a large-scale work in the form of an orchestral suite that tells the musical story of a young girl who, one fateful day, discovers a rare, untitled book in a library. By leave of the mysterious librarian, the girl borrows the book despite an ominous warning. The same evening the girl falls asleep with the open book by her side. The book animates and transports her into a dark, fairy tale world wherein she must fulfill the story’s demands to return home. The Book with No Name Orchestral Suite is accompanied by an original ‘libretto’ written by myself and inspired by Chris Van Allsburg's drawing entitled Mr. Linden's Library. The music depicts select events from this libretto that were deemed appropriate and or best for composing a diverse piece of music that could possess integrity without context.”

Portfolio Panic

“This project was an online portfolio of designer Matthew Cryderman. Matthew approached me with the concept for an interactive portfolio wherein a client would play a brief 8-bit video game entitled Portfolio Panic that would allow them to collect and view the various pieces of his portfolio. Matthew proposed the idea that the music and sound effects of this project possess the 8-bit sound quality reflecting the character and quality of the classic video games of Super Nintendo and Gameboy entertainment systems that we grew up playing and that inspired this project he endeavored to create. Sharing the same nostalgic love of a bygone era in video games, I immediately agreed to compose the music. The music is produced entirely from simple modular synthesizers utilizing basic wave forms; this was crucial to getting the sound just right. Music was composed for world environments and boss fights. Additionally, I constructed sound effects for passing cars, rain, thunder, lightning, blasts, impacts and healing sounds using the same synthesizers. Click the image to play it now!”

Wonderheart

“I prepared seven orchestral arrangements for Ottawa's indie pop artist Noah Venkatarangam's EP album entitled Wonderheart. Noah and I consulted the material together, discussing features such as the musical character and flavor that he meticulously envisioned for his music. Noah provided me with his basic orchestral sketches and I was then tasked with re-arranging and re-recording as well as composing new arrangements. This was done in such a way to compliment and embellish the musical drama within a select number of songs on the album without stealing focus from foreground material such as Noah’s vocals and rhythm sections. Here is an artist who is bold, particular, and talented and it was my pleasure to ensure his original vision for the music remained intact.”

Daniel is possibly one of the most intuitive collaborators I have had the pleasure to work with. Simply put, he doesn’t just give you what you ask for, he gives you infinitely more.

The Last Voyage of the Karluk

"The Last Voyage of the Karluk is a short history documentary following the 1913 arctic expedition of a vessel called the Karluk. The ship departed Canada for the arctic only to be trapped in sea ice, leaving the crew and passengers stranded for thirteen months and claiming the lives of eleven men. The story of the Karluk is one of bravery, heroism, tragedy and the perseverance of the human spirit and the music is a reflection of those qualities. Given the period of this project I opted for traditional instrumentation of orchestra, piano and even banjo. The character of this score is often a lonesome, melancholic one which is facilitated not only by selected harmonic movement but with instruments such as solo cello, banjo, clarinet and English horn. Perhaps the most effective segment of this score is the musical passage that accompanies the rescue of the Karluk’s remaining crew. As a composer, I felt I had to get this moment just right by unifying the score’s primary theme in full orchestral and choral setting to mirror the powerful notion of long awaited salvation that those few remaining were fortunate enough to embrace."

Laptopparts.ca Radio Jingle

LaptopParts.ca commissioned me to produce a jingle for a radio commercial they would advertise locally. For this project I chose to arrange a short funk track as a sound bed over which the dialogue would be presented in the final cut. The commercial aired for a three-week period on Boom 101.9 in Cornwall, Ontario during August 2018.”

Daniel intuitively understood what was required musically based on the context in which the music would be used. His work met and exceeded our expectations.

Groves Wedding Processional

“Brendan Groves and Ashley Chisholm commissioned a processional piece of music from me for their wedding day to which Ashley and her bridesmaids would walk down the aisle. The bride and groom approached me with the sentiment that they would love a personal and unique piece of music composed for their special day. A consultation ensued involving a review of reference music to establish the tone, direction and instrumentation for the piece. The couple used descriptive words such as floating, delicate and graceful and so I began work on a piece of music that evoked a sense of wonder and mystery; music that embodied the very idea of fate unfolding before one’s waking eyes, a destiny that is wondrous and beautiful to behold in this lifetime. Timing was pivotal in planning the trip down the aisle: a series of musical moments, small and big, were to act as cues for the bridesmaids and Ashley herself during the procession. With some light rehearsal the execution of music and procession was perfection. Brendan, Ashley and I embarked on a very personal, creative voyage to carefully tailor the music to their liking and deliver a piece that met and exceeded their vision of a day that they would share and remember for the rest of their lives.”
